Bourbon Chili BBQ Burgers

In recognition of Independence Day, we set out to create a savory and spicy burger.  At the back end of a day abuzz with parades, games, and colorful explosions, it is felicitous to kick back with good friends, a charcoal fire and homemade libations.  Freedom imparts a latitude of expression conspicuous by its vast expanse.  Nothing avers artistic sovereignty as does chili.

Chili Baste Ingredients:

¼ C bourbon

½ C barbeque sauce

1 T chili powder

½ t liquid smoke

½ jalapeno hot sauce

5 – 1/3 lb hamburger patties

Directions:

  1. Mix the baste ingredients.
  2. Brush baste onto the patties and store in the fridge while you have a few beers- likely around 3 hours.
  3. Fire out the grill.
  4. Grill the bourbon chili bbq burgers, brushing on the chili baste as needed.

Tasting Notes:

On a fantastic day distinguished by terrific weather and an abundance of merriment, these burgers turned out to be a disappointment.  Somehow these preformed beef patties sucked the life out of the chili baste, to the extent that it could not be tasted.  The take-home is that this baste is far too mild for preformed beef patties.  It may fare well with other cuts of meat, but of this I cannot be certain.   Of all the guaranteed freedoms perhaps the most useful is the freedom to fail.  Nonfulfillment engenders hardened resolve.

Okay, so it looks like I should make this a part of my daily read… somehow. Maybe the harder part will be catching up. Or, is it ketch…up. Thanks again for the feast!
