Meatball stroganoff chili

Day 50
The ITP is savvy, they still inquire as to what we will be eating for our evening meal. Naturally, I respond “chili.” They are poised to rapidly return serve, “Yeah, I know (this delivered with a sublime mixture of condescension and utter sympathy), but what kind of chili?” It has been, after all, 51 consecutive days. My chili-addled brain is starting to misfire. What I had thought to be a large beetle crawling around on my shirt turned out to be nothing more than a fragment of chili flotsam. Surely only Kafka and Burroughs could truly commiserate.
The stroganoff chili idea was hatched during a snowy trail run with one of the ITP. Why, as we dashed down the snowy slope toward the creek adjacent to the dog park, did my brain stick on stroganoff of all things? I have no idea, but stroganoff sure beats the hell out of yellow snow.

Mix in a bowl:
1 C sour cream
2 T flour
1 t chili powder
1 t chicken bullion

Set aside.

Add to a pot:
1T butter
3 cloves minced garlic
1 lb precooked turkey meatballs, quartered
1 red pepper, diced
½ pound mushrooms, sliced
2 t chili powder
1 t paprika
½ t red pepper flakes
1/3 C pickled cactus, chopped

Sauté over medium heat, about 15minutes.
Add sour cream mixture.
Simmer another 5 minutes.
Serve over cooked egg noodles.

Tasting notes.
Strangely, members of the ITP IDed this one on sight. Choruses of, “Hey looks like stroganoff,” rang out as they hit the kitchen. Funny, as stroganoff is on the menu about once every 2 years. The plates were cleared without complain but, also, without compliment. It may be that the ITP is simply resigned to its fate or, perhaps, they weren’t feeling particularly vociferous this evening. Either way, a triumph of sorts. In any case, I like recipe far better than our biannual stroganoff recipe and It almost goes without mention that I like it far, far more than I would yellow snow.
